The viability of meaningful political representation withers as the ratio of representatives to voters decreases. There are 435 members in the House of Representatives in a country of 328 million people. This means that each member “represents” an average of 755,000 people. How exactly does one person represent the federal legislative preferences of 755,000 diverse people?
The beak of the mask would be filled with herbs and spices that would produce pleasant smells, which were believed to protect the wearer from invisible “poisonous emanations” in the air, called “miasma,” which created harmful imbalances in a person’s “humors,” or bodily fluids.
Citizens do not vote to get higher rates of poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, and crime. They vote for Leftists because they trust them to fulfill their promises to end these social ills through the implementation of “progressive” policies. When reality trumps their ideology and the Left inevitably fails, it needs a reason.
PPP loans – a.k.a. “Magic Beans” – are so effective that they saved more jobs than the total number of employees in at least 15 industries. Landscape architecture firms “retained 114,000 jobs — more than three times the number of people who worked in that sector in 2019,” the Washington Post reported.
It’s easy to point out how senseless and counterproductive this boycott is. Founded in 1936 by Mr. Unanue’s Spanish immigrant grandparents, the company is a living example of the American Dream. Mr. Unanue hopes his company’s story will inspire other Latino entrepreneurs. He was praised by Michelle Obama for Goya’s big role in her healthy-food initiative. None of it matters to AOC and her comrades.
Sowell points out that for charter schools to succeed, they must please parents by educating students. Charters do not offer tenure to teachers, and therefore leaders and parents can demand high levels of performance from every teacher. Correct incentives enable charters to succeed, with teachers accountable to the parents and the school. Public schools have perverse incentives: parents often have no choice.
These People incessantly display utter ignorance of – or contempt for – basic economic realities. These People have done so for generations. Much of what These People say about economic matters is the economic equivalent of voodoo, and even more of what they do on the economic front is destructive.
Socialism with a capitalist veneer will be plagued with the same chaos that always afflicts plain-faced socialism. Socialism has been cataclysmically lethal wherever it has been tried, and will always be so: it will make no difference whether it emerges through nationalization or intervention.
What’s happening now is a spread of anxiety disorders, paranoid delusions, and irrational fear – serious medical conditions – to the whole population. Here we see a primal fear of disease turning into mass panic. It seems almost deliberate. It is tragic. Once this starts, it could take years to repair the psychological damage.”
As any student of human nature knows, people who do not benefit personally from their hard work tend not to work all that hard. The upshot was that more was taken than given. Imagine that.
