The decision is bad; it’s an extension of the city’s straw ban, plastic bag ban, and all the other Big Brother bans that make San Francisco more politically correct than liveable. Nothing is solved with these bans and quality of life is never improved any more than the earth is saved
Pollsters continuously report that the dominant modern political factions hate each other to an unprecedented degree, and their chosen standard bearers are seeking to act on that loathing. It’s enough to make you think government officials shouldn’t be trusted with the powerful tools of the state.
What makes our values right and theirs wrong? Why should our views and values prevail? Under our Constitution, many practices are protected — abortion, blasphemy, pornography, flag-burning, trashing religious beliefs — that other nations regard as symptoms of a disintegrating society.

Hayek saw grand plans as a perfect vehicle for the fatal conceit, and argued that highly mobile and creative human beings may have a better approach when left to their own devices. As he points out, ordinary people tend to solve the problems they confront, to figure things out, and invent efficient new ways of doing things
The capitalist bears the risk of potential losses. Appetite for risk is in limited supply. Most people are not willing to risk losing their own funds (or borrowed funds that they will have to repay) in the event their produced goods are not valued by consumers at a price higher than the production costs.
Many difficulties of coordination remain. But it’s interesting to think of just what can be accomplished even on this modest scale. Many of the problems of unaccountability in bureaucracy are solved, because the activities and prices are private bids.
